Description

Multi-function control for landing deck cargo

The General Cargo Handling Tool gives deck crews push, pull and tag-line retrieval functions in one pole for positioning supported cargo close to the deck. Its two head profiles engage different cargo features: an angled U-shaped attachment for box-section frames and a V-shaped attachment for container or basket corners. OHS USA can help Americas operators choose the correct length and hand-grip style for their cargo-handling plan.

Cargo and work areas

  • Containers and open-ended half-height baskets.
  • Enclosed power packs and framed deck equipment.
  • Cutting skips, fuel tanks and comparable deck cargo.
  • Final guiding and landing tasks after tag lines stabilize the supported load.
  • Tandem positioning where two crew members use an approved coordinated method.

Choose the engagement point and model

Use the angled U-shaped attachment on suitable box-iron frames up to 4 inches. Use the V-shaped attachment to push against an appropriate corner of a container or basket. Confirm cargo geometry before choosing a tool length. Enclosed handles are listed at 1300 and 1500 mm on both the official page and product sheet. The page also lists an 1800 mm enclosed model, while the PDF does not. An open-handle 1500 mm model is listed in both sources.

  • Medium-density polyethylene head and 30 mm marine-grade aluminium staff.
  • High-visibility attachments, replaceable low-compression rubber grommets and tag-line retrieval hook.
  • Hand protector and durable foam-rubber grip listed in the official product sheet.

Positioning guidance

Stabilize the load with tag lines and engage only when the container or frame is close to the deck. Approach the selected feature face-on and keep the attachment fully seated. Tandem pushing with two tools can help align a container when the lift plan and communication method support it. The handling tool adds a controlled contact point but does not replace tag lines, the banksman or the lifting-equipment operator.

Safety and use limitations

  • Never stand beneath suspended cargo.
  • Do not use the tool for leverage or as a load-bearing rigging component.
  • Engage only when cargo is close to the deck and movement is controlled.
  • Use the tag-line hook only from the approved safe position.
  • Inspect the attachments, staff, grommets, hand protector and grip before use.
  • Follow the lift plan, exclusion zones, communication rules and required personal protective equipment.
